How to use the calculator

The calculator aims at woodworker who want to solve simple static issues. Please use it with discernment and do not rely on the results.
It uses Euler–Bernoulli Balkentheorie to calculate internal forces. Material data and safety factors of wood are according to DIN 1052:2004-08. No safety factors are applied at the load site!

Dimensions

  • b: profile width
  • h: profile height
  • l: beam length

Material

  • Chose your material. All parameters will be calculated according to DIN 1052:2004-08 \ for the choosen wood, usage and load duration.
  • Custom: Here you can use your own material parameters.

Load

  • M: Discrete mass at the center of the beam.
  • m: Distribute mass (e.g. snow load). Note that m is in [kg] and not in [kg/mm]!
  • Net weight: The calculator adds net weight of the beam automatically.

Utilization

  • Bending: Ration of current bending stress to admissible bending stress.
  • Shear: Ration of current shear stress to admissible shear stress.

Deformation (short term load)

  • d: Deflection of the beam without creepage. Shear deformation is neglected.

Deformation (permanent load)

  • d: Deflection of the beam with creepage.Shear deformation is neglected.

Eigenfrequency

  • f: Lowest bending eigenfrequency due to the loads M, m end net weight.

Stress

  • Bending stress: Maximum bending stress.
  • Shear stress: Maximum shear stress.

Dead load

  • Dead load: Dead load of the beam. This load is included in the strength calculation.
